Explores the issue of the "cochlear implant", a complex device that is surgically implated into an individual's cochlea in the inner ear, and then connected to a transmitter, a sound receiver and a small micro-compressor. Some people who have had this operation have been able to obtain a semblance of hearing that they claim has been of tremendous help in our predominantly "hearing" world. Others have not been so successful. The promoters of the device and some doctors claim it is like having a "bionic ear". Deaf people, on the other hand, claim that its merits have been over-sold and that the implant is yet another example of hearing people attempting to fix deaf people, people who see themselves not as handicapped but as different. This program explores both viewpoints and explains why the deaf feel so suspicious about those who claim they know what is best for them.
