This film is inspired on a true story of Roberta (Streep)a teacher who finds success teaching violin classes to kids in Harlem. She is reeling from her husband's affair with another woman and his request for a divorce. With two kids, she has nowhere to go until she meets an old friend (Aidan Quinn). Besides helping her get the teaching position, there is a promise of a romance between these two. However, we never really see it. After they become comfortable with each other, the relationship turns bad, with Streep constantly badgering him to make a commitment. Streep's character annoyed me, and she didn't seem to be a good fit for the role. At first this movie seemed promising, but after a while, it became downright boring. The ending was very predictable, although the story did not progress the way most "inspirational" movies (Like the incredibly wonderful "Mr. Holland's Opus") do; with the characters growing. Instead, we are subjected to a variety of students throughout the years. I watched this mainly for Aidan Quinn, but he was only in the movie sporadically. I'm glad other reviewers enjoyed the movie so much... because I sure didn't.

A very nice way to kill a couple of hours. Sort of a Rocky for violins. Nice to see a good positive message especially during these times.
