Loved the cover on this one. Read the book and realized I had read this years ago for White Pine. The story still holds for me. Malcolm is trying to do like everyone else and get by in high school. He is not popular and does not fit in with any crowd.
Malcolm has a couple of good friends but none know his real secret - he believes he was abducted by aliens.
In addition to a very dysfunctional home life with a divorced alcoholic mother, he helps a homeless man named Hopper who belongs to his alien support group. Mal is also a rescuer of animals.
I love the ending of the story and enjoyed reading this book again.

A short and provocative read, First Day on Earth delves into the age old question of whether or not aliens exist, and if so, how do they live their lives? Mal is a troubled character who has suffered a lot in his short life – abandonment from his father and an alcoholic mother. Was his alien abduction sinmply the result of a hyperactive imagination and an adolescent projection of fear and abandonment? Or do aliens truly exist? It’s up for the reader to decide.

I loved this book! I liked the story, but I really wish it was longer. It was realistic and unrealistic at the same time.

I really disliked this book. I didn't even finish it! The chapters were so short and didn't make any sense. I thought I would have liked this book but I guess I was wrong. I don't recommend this book to anyone. Sorry to anyone who did like the book.

The story was great but all the short chapters made the book confusing.

I found this novel better-suited for a 6th or 7th grader. There were far too many 1-2 page chapters, this made the novel choppy and filled with disconnectiong ideas, thoughts, and statements. To be honest I am kind of confused as to why this novel is a nominee in the first place.
