Neither Delorme nor Cardinal can imagine where their investigation will lead: into a decades-old injustice committed in the high Arctic; into the swingers' world inhabited by an ex-rock star who owns a pub in Algonquin Bay as well as private members' clubs in Toronto and Ottawa; into the insecurity that afflicts Delorme the woman and the cop, and into the deep bond between Delorme and Cardinal, which is at a real risk of coming undone.

I agree with Pisinga. Giles Blunt's writing had really captured me as an avid reader who has lived in northern Ontario and as well knows the very district his detective John Cardinal travels to in Toronto. However, the pleasure I get from reading these mysteries has sunk a lot with the unpleasant sexual elements now creeping in. (Yeah, I guess I'm a prude, but so what! I also like movies that don't have coarse language and blatant nudity.) I'm sure the books will only get worse though and therefore no longer recommend Giles Blunt to my set of friends or my family without embarrassment.

Until the Night is a John Cardinal murder mystery set in the fictional city of Alonquin Bay Ontario. The location and general description match North Bay. Why Blunt didn't just use North Bay is a mystery in itself. That being said the mystery in the novel is a good one with two separate unrelated narratives converging to a thrilling climax. There's also a side story and budding romance. In the main mystery somebody has chained a woman outdoors in winter to die of hypothermia which, as described, would be a long and painful death. Naturally John Cardinal will figure it out but the fun is in getting there.

Parts of the book "From the Blue Notebook" are very powerful. Although the end of it is very similar to those ones that you have already read in other books or saw in movies when there are similar situations.
I dislike too much detailed descriptions of what is going one inside of swingers clubs and some really unnecessary detailed scenes of not orthodox sex. Is it that now every author in order to make his/her book more exiting should to include all that stuff similar to "50 Shades of Grey" or alike? For me this was very disappointing.

More foul language and sex than usually found in his writing. The story within the story presents a new element. Great read as always.

One of the best in this series.
