This eighth season feels weaker than the others, as if they ran out of ideas. Too much time, I feel, is spent on Amy’s family, comparing and merging two unlike families. Don’t get me wrong; the idea would have worked for one, maybe two, episodes, but a great deal of this season centers on this new development, which wears thin swiftly. However, there are a few remarkable exceptions. I love the episode “Home from School” in which Michael refuses to go to class. This episode is a wonderful spotlight on Sullivan Sweeten as he shares a moment with Ray and they discuss a sadly near-universal experience. Overall, though, the season is comprised of a great number too many of episodes about Amy's brother and parents and their place among the Barone clan. For that reason alone, I was less impressed with this eighth season.
