I am preparing to bring a puppy into my home and this book helped me bring into focus what life will look like once he arrives. It is the second training book that I have read and while I think the first title offered more practical, step by step training advice, I do believe that this title has a lot of value. It made me think very introspectively about how I personify my pets in a way that may be inappropriate for their healthy development; we can still love them like people while respecting that their instincts and needs come from a different place than ours. Cesar Millan does a great job of explaining where a puppy's "misbehaviors" are originating on an instinctual level and how we can reframe our actions in a way that a puppy will inherently understand. My 3 star rating only comes from the many references to his other books and the occasional unnecessary tangent. I have no idea where the comment below about his tactics being scary and harmful to dogs is coming from.

His methods use punishment and other tactics that will scare and hurt dogs. That certainly does not help them be happy. To really help your dog be happy and well behaved, look for books and videos by trainers like Karen Pryor,
Patricia McConnell, Jean Donaldson,
Kathy Sdao (From Tacoma!), Jane Killion. Here is a great website with free positive videos. http://dogmantics.com/free-video-list/

If you exist in a zen state 100% of the time this system will work. However, if you are a normal human being, prone to being frustrated with bad behavior, forget it. He may be a wonderful trainer himself, but his method will not work for the average individual. You'd be better off hiring him or going to a local obedience school.
