Many, many years ago this was the book that got me back into reading for pleasure. This book was absolutely magical for me. My teenage daughter shares my love for reading so I asked if she would like to read this book with me. I was worried that it would lose it's magic and that my memory of it would be tarnished a bit, but I had nothing to worry about. It was almost as magical as the first time, but better because I was sharing it with my daughter who was just as caught up in the magic as I had been. This is a wonderful story of good versus evil, government cover ups, ethical quandaries of man's potential for greatness as well as his potential for extreme evil. You find yourself rooting for the good to win over the bad, the simple, ordinary, good, but flawed beings finding greatness when confronted with evil. Despite all the odds and horror of what is going on around them, our characters find strength, love and hope which is why I love this story as much as I do. Upon my second reading, I found it isn't without some flaws. In my opinion, the main flaw is the almost preachiness of the responsibility of man playing God, which is a great message, but the message didn't need to stated over and over. It is such a minor thing and doesn't detract from enjoyment though. I just wanted to be thorough. So, if you are looking for deep, intellectually stimulating reading, this is not the book for you. If you want a simple, easy, feel good journey, this one is perfect.
