Anne Frank Remembered

the Story of the Woman Who Helped to Hide the Frank Family

I get the impression that Miep Gies was reluctant to tell her story, for fear of taking the spotlight away from Anne Frank. But Miep need not have worried; her story enhances Anne's instead of taking away from it. Miep's life was so amazing. I kept pausing in my reading to tell my family little tidbits from the book. Some of these tidbits include: how Miep narrowly avoided being deported to Austria, how Miep stood up to the Nazi who arrested the occupants of the Annex, and how Miep cared for Otto Frank after the war. She claims she was just an ordinary woman, but I think she was extraordinary. Miep also tells of her husband's wartime resistance activities, and she weaves their love story into the narrative. I would recommend this book for almost anyone. Miep's message is one that needs to be spread to as many people as possible.
